She had her undergraduate and medical degrees from Harvard and trained in internal medicine and preventive medicine. She taught scores of physicians and other health professionals at the University of Colorado and then at CDC. Over the course of her medical career\, she published 214 scientific papers and discovered new diseases such as "popcorn lung" from inhaling butter flavorings. She achieved many national awards for lifetime science achievement\, service\, partnership\, and public health leadership.
