Speaker:
Camille Ferguson
Presentation:
As a citizen of the Sitka Tribe of Alaska and a member of the Kiksádi Clan, Camille Ferguson continues to serve on the National Advisory Committee on Transportation Tourism Infrastructure (NACTTI) and was recently elected to the U.S. Travel Association’s Board of Directors. She is only the second-ever Native American to serve on that board and her three-year board term will run through 2021. During her board terms, she plans to augment her work with elected officials in advocating for the importance of tribal tourism in the national tourism message. Locally, Camille has been appointed to serve on the Sitka Economic Development Board.
Bios:
Previously, she served as Executive Director of the American Indian Alaska Native Tourism Association (AIANTA) for more than six years. Under her direction, AIANTA expanded its international marketing and outreach program and grew their training programs; improved its Public Outreach Program; and broadened the Public Lands Partnership Program; and gained national recognition as the leading organization for Indian Country Tourism USA. Camille was instrumental in gaining national support for the passage of the Native American Improving Visitors Experience( NATIVE) Act, along with the advocacy needed to support the appropriation to implement the unfunded mandate that required all federal agencies with tourism authority to include Native Americans, Alaska natives and native Hawaiians into their tourism planning process.
Fulfilling her mission, her work as Executive Director for AIANTA was completed in March 2019, with the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding with the Department of Interior and securing a cooperative agreement with the Bureau of Indian Affairs that will stabilize the organization’s funding stream until 2024.
