Presentation:
Outer Coast aspires to be an intensive, two-year liberal arts college in Sitka. We seek to teach and inspire promising young people to create virtuous change in the world and in their own lives. Outer Coast aims to accomplish this mission by providing a rigorous and challenging academic curriculum marked by exceptional pedagogy and faculty engagement; by imparting the value of service to a diverse student body entrusted with limited powers of self-governance; by cultivating love for community and respect for nature within the setting of Sitka, Alaska; by fostering creativity, curiosity, honesty, generosity, resilience, self-reliance, and good humor; and by accompanying students in their search for self-understanding and moral worth.
The inaugural Outer Coast Summer Seminar commenced in July 2018 and offers a diverse cohort of Alaskan and Lower 49 high school students a transformative academic experience and the opportunity to engage with the world they are about to inherit. Over the course of a month, students immerse themselves in a fast-paced, college-level academic course; participate in a meaningful, work-based service program; and engage in self-governance.
