Hal Spackman will be giving the latest updates on the Sitka Historical Museum.
Biography
Former Mt. Edgecumbe High School superintendent Hal Spackman is the executive director of the Sitka Historical Society and museum.
Spackman who was principal and superintendent at Mt. Edgecumbe from 1990 to 2003, was education supervisor for Southcentral Foundation’s The Pathway Home in Anchorage before returning to Sitka to accept the historical society position.
“Mr. Spackman is an experienced educator and administrator with a passion for history and an extensive background in teaching, administration, fund management and public service,” the historical society said in the announcement. “He is an active, long-time member of our community who is committed to a creative organizational model that thrives on the power of community involvement.
Spackman was associate professor at the University of Alaska Anchorage School of Engineering Alaska Native Science and Engineering Program (ANSEP) from 2003-2006. He also served as Interim Deputy Commissioner of the Alaska Department of Education & Early Development from 2007 to 2008 in Gov. Palin’s administration.
Early in his career Spackman taught school in Metlakatla and Haines, Alaska and Thompson Falls, Montana.
He has a Master’s in Education Administration from the University of Montana and a B.S. in Secondary Education with majors in history and English from Western Montana College.
The Sitka Historical Society, a 59-year-old non-profit organization, operates the city’s historical museum in Harrigan Centennial Hall.
