We seek to teach and inspire promising young people to create virtuous change in the world and in their own lives. Outer Coast aims to accomplish this mission by providing a rigorous and challenging academic curriculum marked by exceptional pedagogy and faculty engagement\; by imparting the value of service to a diverse student body entrusted with limited powers of self-governance\; by cultivating love for community and respect for nature within the setting of Sitka\, Alaska\; by fostering creativity\, curiosity\, honesty\, generosity\, resilience\, self-reliance\, and good humor\; and by accompanying students in their search for self-understanding and moral worth.\n\nThe inaugural Outer Coast Summer Seminar commenced in July 2018 and offers a diverse cohort of Alaskan and Lower 49 high school students a transformative academic experience and the opportunity to engage with the world they are about to inherit. Over the course of a month\, students immerse themselves in a fast-paced\, college-level academic course\; participate in a meaningful\, work-based service program\; and engage in self-governance.\n\n\n\nBios:\n\nBryden is the Outer Coast Project Lead. He is the co-founder of Matriculate and the CEO of College Access and Success at America Achieves\, leading Bloomberg Philanthropies' CollegePoint initiative. Both efforts aim to support high-achieving\, lower-income students apply to\, enroll in\, and\, ultimately\, graduate from top-performing colleges and universities across the U.S. Bryden is a Deep Springs and Harvard College alumnus.\n\n\n\nJonathan represents Sitka\, Petersburg\, and much of rural Southeast Alaska in the Alaska House of Representatives. He cares deeply for rural Alaska and the issues its small communities face. \n\nHe attended Yale College for three years before leaving school early and without a degree to run for the Alaska Legislature.
